The National Basketball Association is the professional men’s basketball league in America. It mostly comprises of 30 teams of which 29 are based in United States and one in Canada. The National Basketball Association is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB). USAB is recognized by the International Basketball Federation, which is USA’s National Governing Body for basketball. The National Basketball Federation is one amongst four major North American professional sports leagues. Basketball league had its beginnings in the year 1946. It was then known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). After the merger with its rival, the National Basketball League in 1949, the Association came to be known by the name National Basketball Association.

The National Basketball Association started with 11 teams in the year 1946. With continuous team expansions, relocations and shunting, the association, at present comprises of 30 teams. The team with the most achievements is the Boston Celtics, with 16 wins. The second team is the Los Angeles Lakers having 14 wins in their kitty. They are then followed by the Chicago Bulls, who won 6 championships within a span of 8 years in the 1990’s. The latest champs are the defending champions San Antonio Spurs who, since 1999 have won 4 championships till date. At present, the teams are divided into two conferences.

Fifty years after its inception, the women’s National Basketball Association was initiated. For development of basketball as a sport and for motivating avid basketball fans, a minor league of the NBA was formed in 2001. It was named the National Basketball Development League. NBA has done a great deal for the interest of basketball fans and for preserving the spirit of basketball.
